Student Interning at OSEA Malibu

Jiyoung Moon was raised in South Korea until age 9, when her family moved to San Diego, California. After graduating from Torrey Pines High School, Jiyoung enrolled at FIDM to pursue her beauty industry dreams. She earned an A.A. in Beauty Marketing & Product Development in 2020, and is currently a student in the B.S. in Beauty Business Management program. We chatted with Jiyoung to learn about her current internship at OSEA Malibu, how FIDM is preparing her for the industry, and her ultimate career goals.

How did you find your internship at OSEA Malibu? I saw the job opening from OSEA Malibu on FIDM’s Career Network and applied. I had three interviews, and as I went through each of them, I fell more and more in love with the brand. Each team member reflected the brand message of clean and safe beauty, wellness, and inclusivity. I think talking about how strongly and whole-heartedly I hold this value transferred to the company and got me the position at the end. FIDM’s amazing Career Advisor Ruth Ritchie was an invaluable part in making me believe in myself and encouraged me every step of the way.

What are your responsibilities as the Brand Marketing Intern? My main responsibilities include conducting comp brand analysis, assisting in various marketing projects, managing internal copy document resources, administering PR orders for the editors, and many more. I get to have a taste and experience in different departments within marketing, including creatives, PR, partnerships, socials, and product development. I love that every day is different for me and challenges me to demonstrate my professionalism in the workplace. Special thanks to Christine, the Director of Brand Marketing, who has been the best mentor that I could’ve ever asked!

How has FIDM helped prepare you for the industry? Before FIDM, I had the consumer perspective when looking at the beauty industry, and FIDM has trained me to view it as a businessperson through different challenging yet rewarding classes. The courses are built to teach both analytical and creative skills which I found are crucial in a work environment because a lot of the problems will require thinking outside-the-box while following the regulations and statistics.

What are your career goals? To work my way up in the marketing team at a beauty brand that puts out the message of sustainability and ethical practices. I want my accomplishments to be about bettering the world and making small yet positive changes in the industry so that it is less about the physical appearance but more about the inner beauty. After several years of experience and industry knowledge, I want to create my own beauty company that combines the concepts of skincare and color cosmetics into one. I want my company to promote the theme of diversity and inclusivity where everyone feels safe and welcomed within the brand’s community.
